Associate Research Professor, Microbiology

Research Summary

Dr. Moser is an environmental scientist who works at the interface of life and Earth sciences. Expertise includes astrobiology, biogeochemistry, public health microbiology, emerging contaminants, archaeology, and conservation biology. Recent topics of study include limits of life (i.e. the deep fractured rock, cave, and hypersaline ecosystems), wastewater surveillance of pathogens (e.g. SARS-CoV-2), Pharmaceuticals in surface waters, environmental (eDNA) for desert fishes, and ancient (aDNA) for understanding of human habitation patterns of the desert southwest over thousands of years. The lab utilizes cultivation-based and molecular life detection methods, in conjunction with environmental and stable isotope chemistry, to track the activities and diversity of life natural habitats.

Environmental Microbiology Laboratory

The Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a versatile platform for the study of life in the environment (from viruses-to-people). The lab includes space for microscopy and instrumentation, media prep, field storage, including a clean room for eDNA work. The lab is capable of handling almost any sample type, which have ranged from the microbiome of the International Space Station to exotic environmental samples including some of the deepest underground samples ever surveyed for life. The lab features a broad range of microbiological cultivation resources, especially for thermophiles and anaerobes. In-house analytical capacity includes flow cytometry, gas chromatography, HPLC, qPCR and traditional PCR. Additional capacities, such as LC-MS, ultracentrifugation and radionuclide handling are available through collaborators at other institutions in the Vegas Valley. The lab’s function is supported by an assortment of field equipment, including truck-mounted borehole logging and discrete sampling equipment, a full complement of limnological instruments, including YSI multiparameter sondes, field photometer, extensive field filtration capacity, and fleet vehicles.

Opportunities

Research and employment opportunities (undergraduate-to-postdoctoral) are often available in our lab, especially for individuals with skills in our core areas of study. Student fellowships are also often available. Please contact Dr. Moser directly for more information. Our graduate students typically obtain their degrees through an affiliated program, such as the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Graduate program applicationdeadlines are typically around 15-January for enrollment in the following Fall semester.
