Professional Interests
Mr. Simeral’s interest and research are in cartography, climate change and variability in mountainous regions, field meteorology and instrumentation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and snow science. David is currently working in conjunction with Scripps Institution of Oceanography – Climate Research Division, California Energy Commission, Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research, National Science Foundation, National Center for Atmospheric Research, National Park Service, NOAA-National Climatic Data Center, University of California, San Diego-White Mountain Research Station, University of California, Berkeley -Central Sierra Snow Laboratory, University of California Natural Reserve System, and USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station on climate monitoring and research projects throughout the western United States.
Current Research Projects
- American Samoa: Establishment of a climate network for the National Park Service – Pacific Island Inventory and Monitoring Network. (Department of the Interior, National Park Service).
- California: Establishment of a climate observation network for the University of California Natural Reserve System. (National Science Foundation. Collaborators: K Redmond and M Stromberg).
- Southern Colorado Plateau, Arizona: Establishment of a dense climate observational network to investigate the relationship between near-surface air temperature, elevation, and slope aspect. (University of Nevada, Reno, Desert Research Institute, Merriam Powell Center for Environmental Research. Collaborator: Neil Cobb).
- California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon & Washington: Lead site surveyor for the NOAA Historical Climatology Network Modernization Project. (NOAA, National Weather Service, Office of Science and Technology and National Climatic Data Center. Collaborators: J Lawrimore and K Redmond).
- Sierra Nevada, California: Climatological and hydrological monitoring and analysis for the Sierra Nevada Range. (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Climate Research Division, & California Energy Commission). Collaborators: D Cayan, and K Redmond).
- Alaska: Climate monitoring assessment for the Arctic Inventory and Monitoring Network, Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. (Department of Interior, National Park Service. Colloborators: K Redmond and P Sousanes).
