Las Vegas, NV: The Desert Research Institute proudly announced today that Tracy Bower has been named the Institute’s new Director of External Affairs.
Bower will lead DRI’s external affairs and public engagement activities, focusing on increasing public awareness of DRI’s research activities and scientific impact throughout Nevada and around the world. She will oversee DRI’s legislative portfolio and work to engage community leaders and local organizations interested in connecting with DRI’s diverse assembly of research faculty, students, and support staff.
“I am truly honored to join the team at DRI,” said Bower. “I look forward to working in the community to improve the public’s understanding of what DRI does for our state and share all of the important scientific discoveries and innovative research being conducted here.”
Bower comes to DRI from Mission Support and Test Services (MSTC), LLC, a division of Honeywell, where she led a team responsible for media relations, government affairs, video and graphic arts, and internal and external communications, as well as public, programmatic, and special tours of the Nevada National Security Site.
Bower has worked in an external affairs and communications capacity in Southern Nevada for over two decades and has led successful public outreach, legislative affairs, and communications campaigns for agencies such as the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the City of Henderson, and the Regional Transportation Commission.
“Tracy’s extensive communications experience and in-depth knowledge of Nevada politics, combined with her experience working in Carson City and in Washington D.C. with Nevada’s Congressional Delegation,bring a critical skillset to our administrative science support team,” said DRI President Dr. Kristen Averyt. “Her proven leadership and connections throughout our state will help DRI continue to enhance our public engagement initiatives leading up to our 60th anniversary in March 2019, and beyond.”
Bower is also an Emmy award-winning television news producer and holds a Master’s degree in Ethics and Public Policy and Bachelor of Communications Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
