Justin Broglio serves as the primary spokesperson for DRI. He is responsible for implementing the organization's external and internal communications and integrated marketing strategies. He serves as press officer for the Institute's 100+ Ph.D. research faculty, serving as a liaison with the public and promoting DRI research findings, funding, and scientific accomplishments to journalists and news organizations around the world. He also oversees DRI's websites, social media presence and external public relations.

Justin joined DRI in 2012 after a successful career marketing and promoting the Lake Tahoe region and serving the Reno/Lake Tahoe tourism industry. He is a science communicator, writer, and award-winning journalist with more than 10 years of experience in public relations and marketing. He is also the past President of the Sierra Avalanche Center. He studied Natural Resource Ecology/Conservation and Journalism at the University of Idaho.

Jaq Davis joined DRI in 2017 as a Communications Intern during the final year of her Master’s in English program at the University of Nevada, Reno and transitioned to a full-time role after graduation in May 2018. As the Science Communications Coordinator, she manages DRI’s social media presence, creates digital and print content, assists with public outreach and educational events, and provides writing and media relations support for DRI faculty, students, and staff. 

A native of the rural Sierra Nevada foothills, Jaq is passionate about place, well-told stories, and collaboration. She brings these values and a wide range of writing, teaching, and administrative experience to her work at DRI. Her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are in English with emphases in writing, and she has taught and tutored students in writing at the college, high school, and middle school levels. She also has experience in environmental reporting, publishing, and social science research.

Kelsey Fitzgerald, Science Writer

Kelsey Fitzgerald is a science writer for the DRI Communications Office. In this position, she works with scientists to communicate their research to the public and/or other scientists through press releases and a variety of other digital media products such as web pages, blogs, photography, video and podcasts. She also assists with the creation of content for newsletters, fact sheets, reports, or any other type of outreach materials needed for projects. Kelsey has an undergraduate degree in biology, ten years of work experience in the areas of environmental restoration and conservation, and a Master's degree in interactive journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Based in Reno, Jennifer Baro is the Desert Research Institute's Senior Web Content Administrator. She is the Lead Administrator and Project Manager responsible for DRI’s websites, architecture and content strategies, usability, and coordinated strategic messaging. With 20 years of experience in web design and web systems management, Jennifer is the primary contact and liaison to the Institute for anything web.

Jennifer holds a degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in Environmental Science and Policy and carries certifications in Project Management, Innovation and Information Technology Management, Social Media Marketing, and Website Foundations. She also has editorial experience and awards in photography.

 

Meghan Collins, STEM Environmental Scientist

Meghan joined DRI in June 2015 as Environmental Education Lead. In this position, she worked to expand the lifelong learning partnerships and opportunities for the public to benefit from DRI science. As DRI's new STEM Environmental Scientist, Meghan supports faculty engagement and outreach on STEM-related issues and opportunities.

Meghan’s education and professional experience is interdisciplinary. Her undergraduate and Master’s degrees are in environmental science, emphasizing international development and environmental policy. Her academic resume includes positions in ecological science, policy studies, and social science. She has taught environmental science as an adjunct faculty member in community colleges in both the US and New Zealand. Her professional experience includes policy, outreach, and organizational development. She has experience in cross-cultural learning, having lived and worked in four countries across the globe.
