SUMMARY:STEM Professional Development Training: Truckee Watershed STEM Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Truckee Meadows Water Authority\, the Desert Research Institute STEM Education Program has created two new middle/high school lessons! These two lessons will use computational simulations to illustrate how water management within the Truckee River watershed balances human sustainability and environmental biodiversity. The first lesson focuses on water management of dams and reservoirs\, and the second lesson focuses on urban source water protection. This professional development training will lead educators through the online resources and allow educators to discuss how these resources could best be implemented in their classrooms. Although this training will cover grade level standards\, all interested educators are welcome to attend! \nEducators who attend the session will be eligible for up to 1.5 Continuing Education hours. Note that this training can be taken in conjunction with the 9/27 Watersheds and Water Quality training and the 11/8 Solar Homes training to earn a full 0.5 credit (7.5 CE Hours). See the DRI Professional Development page for more information. \nClick here to register: https://forms.gle/Ei4rmpe2eBoijdnU7

SUMMARY:AWE+2025 Collaborative: Wildfire & Beyond – Building an Adaptable and Resilient World
DESCRIPTION:AWE+ is a DRI global initiative formed in 2024. Reflecting the four classical elements of nature – air\, water\, earth\, and fire – AWE+ advances community resilience and adaptability in the face of increasing\, inevitable catastrophes that affect human lives and environmental ecosystems. It addresses tough challenges by promoting actionable solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration. \nThe AWE+2025 Collaborative will be both a reflective and transitional exercise. It will carry forward and reinforce the objectives of last year’s AWE+2024 summit where DRI brought together stakeholders of various disciplinary backgrounds to consider matters of resilience and recovery in light of the devastating impacts of wildfire. AWE+2025 will build on the 2024 conversations and examine in greater depth the cascading impacts of wildfire and smoke such as heatwaves\, flooding\, and droughts. Its goal is to: \n\nHighlight and prompt the continuing and urgent need for community\, regional\, and state leadership in taking action to strengthen our communities to mitigate inevitable catastrophes that are compounded by changes in climate\, land use\, and population.\nPromote interdisciplinary\, cross-sector collaboration as essential in strengthening the resolve for tough decision making on consequential impacts and challenges to achieve meaningful progress.\n\nWe invite 2024 participants to continue the conversation and welcome persons new to the AWE+ experience to join right in. \nVisit the AWE+ website for more information and to register!

SUMMARY:The View from Here: Stories of Perspective and Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of storytelling that explores the world through new perspectives and the discoveries they inspire. ‘The View from Here’ invites you to see how technology\, curiosity\, and innovation allow us to view our surroundings in ways never before possible. From scientific breakthroughs to personal insights\, these stories reveal how shifting our perspective can unlock a deeper understanding of the world around us. \nPurchase tickets online!  \nDRI Storyteller: \nEric Wilcox\nDr. Wilcox is a DRI researcher focused on the interactions between aerosols\, clouds\, and precipitation to better understand regional climate variability\, radiative forcing of climate at regional scales\, and precipitation processes. His work combines satellite data\, in-situ observations\, and atmospheric modeling to study cloud dynamics and their climatic impacts. As leader of DRI’s atmospheric modeling group\, he employs high-resolution regional and global climate models for applications in water resources\, renewable energy\, and air quality. Additionally\, he directs the ASTER Laboratory\, advancing unmanned aircraft systems for environmental research.  \nFeatured Speaker: \nMichael Branch\, who is University Foundation Professor\, Emeritus at UNR\, is an award-winning writer and humorist who lives with his wife and two daughters in the western Great Basin Desert. His published work includes 300 essays and ten books\, among them the Pulitzer Prize-nominated John Muir’s Last Journey. His trilogy of humorous creative nonfiction from the high desert includes Raising Wild\, Rants from the Hill\, and How to Cuss in Western. His most recent book\, On the Trail of the Jackalope\, which braids humor\, science\, and the arts and humanities\, has been called “an entertaining and enlightening road trip to the heart of an American legend.” Mike was the 2024 inductee into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame.
