SUMMARY:AWE+2025 Collaborative: Wildfire & Beyond – Building an Adaptable and Resilient World
DESCRIPTION:AWE+ is a DRI global initiative formed in 2024. Reflecting the four classical elements of nature – air\, water\, earth\, and fire – AWE+ advances community resilience and adaptability in the face of increasing\, inevitable catastrophes that affect human lives and environmental ecosystems. It addresses tough challenges by promoting actionable solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration. \nThe AWE+2025 Collaborative will be both a reflective and transitional exercise. It will carry forward and reinforce the objectives of last year’s AWE+2024 summit where DRI brought together stakeholders of various disciplinary backgrounds to consider matters of resilience and recovery in light of the devastating impacts of wildfire. AWE+2025 will build on the 2024 conversations and examine in greater depth the cascading impacts of wildfire and smoke such as heatwaves\, flooding\, and droughts. Its goal is to: \n\nHighlight and prompt the continuing and urgent need for community\, regional\, and state leadership in taking action to strengthen our communities to mitigate inevitable catastrophes that are compounded by changes in climate\, land use\, and population.\nPromote interdisciplinary\, cross-sector collaboration as essential in strengthening the resolve for tough decision making on consequential impacts and challenges to achieve meaningful progress.\n\nWe invite 2024 participants to continue the conversation and welcome persons new to the AWE+ experience to join right in. \nVisit the AWE+ website for more information and to register!

DESCRIPTION:Archaeologist\, Jeff Wedding\, will discuss investigations along the San Pedeo\, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad between 1903 and 1905 (the progenitor of today’s Union Pacific line). The talk will focus on archaeological sites related to the construction of the line in Nevada. \nJeffrey Wedding has 30+ years of experience in archaeological and historical research in the desert southwest.  His interests include World War II era military training exercises\, Cold War nuclear testing facilities\, historical archaeology of mining\, transporation\, and ranching during the 19th and early 20th Century. \nOrganized by Nevadan for Cultural Preservation (NVFCP)

Engaging exhibits and artifacts share the origin and consequences of atomic weapons\, Nevada’s role in nuclear testing during the Cold War\, and the science of our atomic universe. Visitors to the Atomic Museum can explore exhibits like Atomic Odyssey\, an immersive adventure into the hidden and powerful world of the atom and The Manhattan Project: Challenges and Consequences that houses artifacts from the top-secret project of lead scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer to build the world’s first atomic bomb. The galleries of the Atomic Museum explore the formation of the Nevada Test Site\, and the people and stories surrounding the 928 nuclear tests that occurred there. Since that time many archaeologists have followed Rogers\, seeking to understand prehistoric cultural affiliations\, culture change\, and how people made a living in these lands using ceramics.
