SUMMARY:AWE+2025 Collaborative: Wildfire & Beyond – Building an Adaptable and Resilient World
DESCRIPTION:AWE+ is a DRI global initiative formed in 2024. Reflecting the four classical elements of nature – air\, water\, earth\, and fire – AWE+ advances community resilience and adaptability in the face of increasing\, inevitable catastrophes that affect human lives and environmental ecosystems. It addresses tough challenges by promoting actionable solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration. \nThe AWE+2025 Collaborative will be both a reflective and transitional exercise. It will carry forward and reinforce the objectives of last year’s AWE+2024 summit where DRI brought together stakeholders of various disciplinary backgrounds to consider matters of resilience and recovery in light of the devastating impacts of wildfire. AWE+2025 will build on the 2024 conversations and examine in greater depth the cascading impacts of wildfire and smoke such as heatwaves\, flooding\, and droughts. Its goal is to: \n\nHighlight and prompt the continuing and urgent need for community\, regional\, and state leadership in taking action to strengthen our communities to mitigate inevitable catastrophes that are compounded by changes in climate\, land use\, and population.\nPromote interdisciplinary\, cross-sector collaboration as essential in strengthening the resolve for tough decision making on consequential impacts and challenges to achieve meaningful progress.\n\nWe invite 2024 participants to continue the conversation and welcome persons new to the AWE+ experience to join right in. \nVisit the AWE+ website for more information and to register!

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host the New World Luminescence Dating Workshop (NWLDW) June 11-14\, 2024 at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Reno\, NV! \nLuminescence dating includes a group of established and rapidly emerging trapped charge dating techniques that are routinely used to constrain the timing of climate change\, tectonics\, sea level change\, topographic change\, natural hazards\, human history and evolution\, and human-environment interactions. NWDLW is a biannual workshop that features posters and presentations from students and researchers that develop and apply luminescence dating techniques in the Earth Sciences and Archaeology. Since that time many archaeologists have followed Rogers\, seeking to understand prehistoric cultural affiliations\, culture change\, and how people made a living in these lands using ceramics. But prehistoric ceramics intersect with\, and are important to\, many people beyond those in academia. Descendant communities have their own unique knowledge about these artifacts and their meaning in the lives of their ancestors. Land managers\, who administer public lands and the resources present thereon\, are charged with the protection and conservation of ceramic-related resources. Just as importantly are museum and curation professionals who care for ceramic collections in-perpetuity on behalf of the American public. DESCRIPTION:Stop by our booth at the Pleistocene Palooza\, where we will have great activities for the kids representing the flora and fauna seen inside the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. We hope to see you there! \nPleistocene Palooza is an annual\, interactive outdoor event for fossil enthusiasts of all ages\, featuring live animals and a junior paleontologist program. Visitors can catch a glimpse of Ice Age Las Vegas–Pleistocene fossils will come alive as visitors meet representative animals that live today. National Park Service staff\, volunteers\, and partners showcase the science behind the scenes that helps us understand past life and environments and how they relate to today. This event is in celebration of National Fossil Day\, an annual celebration held in October to highlight the scientific and educational value of paleontology and the importance of preserving fossils for future generations. \nThe event will be held in the parking area at N. Durango Drive & W. Moccasin Rd. Visitor parking will be available on the northeast side of the intersection.

DESCRIPTION:During Artown we are celebrating the winners of DRI’s annual photography competition and inviting the community to attend this free event for science enthusiasts of all ages. Our scientists and staff travel the globe conducting their research. Along their journeys\, they return with more than just data and samples – they capture striking snapshots of the places they explore\, from the desolate deserts of Nevada to the intricate depths of a microscope.  We will also be hosting an open house during this time with free lab tours on a first-come\, first-served basis and drone demonstration in the courtyard. Come and check out all of the great work that our scientists are doing.
