Description: National Geographic interviews DRI’s Kelly Redmond, Ph.D. regarding what caused famed aviator Steve Fossett to crash. Redmond thinks that he has the answer, and it lies in the unique and unpredictable weather pattern generated by the Sierra Nevada Mountains themselves. Redmond explains, “first of all, the winds coming over the mountains in the winter time, frequently exceeds 100 mph over on these crests over here. When the wind is coming in at a high velocity like that, it will go over the crest of the mountains and will generally hug the topography as it's coming down.”
