Steve Kohl
Title: Associate Research Scientist Professional InterestsAs an Associate Research Scientist and Laboratory Manager for the Environmental Analysis Facility (EAF) at the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Mr. Kohl's responsibilities include: assisting in proposal development; preparing budget estimates; prioritizing projects for daily analysis; performing chemical analysis of aerosol samples by x-ray fluorescence; conducting data validation; and preparing reports. He maintains the field sampling equipment, conducts training on the operation of different types of aerosol sampling systems, provides instrument trouble-shooting, coordinates sample shipping and receiving, and manages field studies. Mr. Kohl has performed numerous sampling campaigns including ambient sampling, source tests, and stack sampling. Mr. Kohl performs complete system audits for both gas and particle measuring systems and meteorological instruments at field sites. He supervises IMPROVE filter preparation and archiving and has conducted data validation for IMPROVE carbon analysis since 2004. Before coming to DRI, he developed fluorescence-based immunochemical assays for use in fiber optic biosensors for environmental monitoring applications for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Kohl was responsible for the installation, maintenance, modification, and flight inspection of commercial and Air Force meteorological and navigational systems.
