Update on the EVPR Search Print E-mail

Sept. 9, 2009

Greetings!

I want to take this opportunity to update you on the search process for the Executive Vice President of Research. Although the EVPR search process will officially begin with the initial meeting of the search committee on September 11, there has already been significant activity related to the search:

  • After a competitive process, Storbeck/Pimentel, a national executive search consulting firm, has been hired to assist DRI with this important search. Mrs. Sharon Tanabe, a principal in the firm, is the lead consultant for the search. She and her team will be assisting DRI throughout the search process.
  • A draft position description and a draft advertisement have been developed.
  • These drafts include input from the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and key senior staff.
  • The Search Committee has been formed. The individuals serving on the committee are:

Jenny Chapman, Associate Research Hydrologist, DHS
Ross Edwards, Associate Research Professor, DHS
Chris Fritsen, Associate Research Professor, DEES
Gannet Hallar, Director, Storm Peak Laboratory, DAS
Ken Kunkel, Executive Director, DAS
Eric McDonald, Research Professor, DEES
Martha McRae, Director of Environmental Health and Safety
Ron Smith, Vice President for Research, UNLV
Cleve McDaniel, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, Committee Chair

During the first meeting of the EVPR Search Committee on September 11, I will deliver the charge to the committee and the committee will also discuss the draft position description and advertisement. Pat Hughes, Director of Human Resources, will also be at the meeting to discuss human resource issues germane to the search.

Other critical events on the search time line include:

  • October 23, 2009 - the deadline for applications
  • November 16-18 - the first round of candidate interviews (phone and/or off-campus interviews)
  • Weeks of January 4 through January 22 - on campus interviews of the finalist
  • January 22, 2010 - the Search Committee meets to develop a report for the President; the report will be an unranked list of the top three candidates with their strengths and weaknesses

Based on this timeline, an offer is expected to be made to the top candidate in late January.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Wells
DRI
