October “Science Distilled” to feature local DRI wildland fire and climate experts

Public lecture series moves to Brewer’s Cabinet Production Facility this month

Reno, NV (Oct. 5, 2016) - When fire season rages, northern Nevadans are often accustomed to blue skies tinged with hazy smoke. Many residents are familiar with the uneasiness that wildfires can cause threatening both safety and property. But what is it like to work on the front lines of wildland fire research?

Find out on Wednesday, October 12th at “Science Distilled,” an interactive, informal public science talk recently launched by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum (The Discovery).

The third event in this new public lecture series, “Science Distilled: Fire Seasoned”, will explore the fine line between wildland fire as a force of destruction and as a vital part of nature.

DRI fire ecologist Adam Watts, PhD, and fire climatologist Tim Brown, PhD, will bust some common myths and misconceptions around wildland fire, drought, and the ecological role of fire.

“Fire impacts everyone in the West,” said Sarah Gobbs-Hill, director of education at The Discovery. “Working with DRI, we are able to present our community with the unique opportunity to learn about the latest wildland fire science and research, in a fun and interactive social atmosphere.”

Watts is an award winning young scientist working on the forefront of unmanned systems research and wildland fire management. His work includes exciting topics like “smoldering combustion” and “pyrogeomorphology”.

Brown, the director of the Western Regional Climate Center and DRI’s Climate, Ecosystems, and Fire Applications program, works on two dynamic and complex phenomena: fire and climate. He has presented his work around the world, and advised fire agencies and staff throughout the US and in far of places like Australia, where wildland fire is a major environmental and societal issue.

“A day in the life of a DRI scientist is anything but boring,” said Meghan Collins, a STEM research scientist at DRI and co-coordinator of the event series. “We’re excited to share emerging research and at the same time tell the stories of the people behind the science.”

Science Distilled is an official NOVA Science Café, designed to make scientific research impactful and relevant to everyday life. Science Distilled events are held in local microbreweries throughout the Truckee Meadows region on a bi-monthly basis.

Science Distilled: Fire Seasoned will be held on October 12th at the Brewer’s Cabinet Production Facility. Doors open at 7pm.
