Solar Panels and Rainwater Infiltration into Soil

Markus Berli stands in front of a lysimeter, a large steel drum containing soil that is used to model soil moisture content after storm events. Arrays of solar panels in the Nevada desert don’t just block the sun’s rays from reaching the ground; they also intercept rainwater, possibly impacting plant and animal habitats, according to DRI's Markus Berli. Berli is currently working on research that will gauge how arrays of solar panels can change the ecosystems inside and around solar installations.
