Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development and Seedstock Bring Together Innovative Indoor Agriculture Leaders to Confront Challenges in Local Food Production

For Immediate Release: March 7, 3013

(Las Vegas) – Entrepreneurs, agriculture industry leaders and Nevada state officials plan to come together to propel forward the development of creative and sustainable indoor growing solutions. The Nevada Indoor Agriculture Conference will aim to increase local food production in the dry desert landscape that abounds in Nevada and, in turn, bolster the state’s internal food supply as well as the local economy. Indoor agriculture has the potential to meet future food demands, reduce environmental impacts, and create new economic engines.

To address these challenges, notables in sustainable and indoor agriculture will bring their leading-edge products and ideas to the Nevada Indoor Agriculture Conference on Wednesday, April 24.  This one-day event at the Historic 5th Street School in Downtown Las Vegas, will focus on how the state can increase its indoor agriculture production in a sustainable manner and become a recognized hub for innovation in this space.

Speakers and panelists who have confirmed their attendance represent a Who’s Who of investors, industry leaders and entrepreneurs who already are proving that indoor agriculture can help conserve precious water resources, negate the need for pesticides, enable local chefs and retailers to obtain fresher food faster and strengthen local food systems.

Confirmed speakers include:

David Bell, chief marketing officer of Houweling’s Tomatoes, a family-owned, world-renowned greenhouse tomato grower with facilities in Camarillo, CA and Delta, BC that is constantly innovating to reduce its environmental footprint. Bell brings a strategic marketing and branding voice to the perishable produce industry where flawless execution is critical to success.

Matt Geschke, managing partner of Brotherhood Products, whose company is shaking up the hydroponic equipment world with its focus on developing sustainable indoor growing technologies to that address such intractable growing challenges as lack of adequate irrigation resources, adverse climatic conditions, remote site locations and volatile infrastructure.

Zack Porter, operating partner at Pegasus Capital Advisors, is a successful entrepreneur with deep ties to Silicon Valley venture firms. Porter focuses on developing investment opportunities in companies that offer solutions to food scarcity, food security and improved nutrition.

Marilyn Yamamoto, owner of Cowboy Trail Farm, a Las Vegas-based farm that grows an assortment of vegetables and herbs on one and a half acres in the Northwest area of Las Vegas. Yamamoto’s farm features a 50-tree fruit orchard, an aquaponics system and three hoop houses enabling her to grow year round.

Other innovative businesses that will be represented at the conference include CropKing, a manufacturer and distributor of commercial greenhouses and hydroponic systems, supplies and equipment throughout the world, Whole Foods Market and Hydro Greens, a Nevada-based 30,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse operation growing herbs, lettuces and assorted micro greens.

“We have an impressive group of speakers lined up for the conference, and we know they will bring a wealth of information to the attendees,” said Seedstock co-founder Robert Puro. “With their vast experiences, they all bring unique perspectives on the subject of indoor agriculture; we are grateful to have each one of them on board.”
