DRI tasked as technical lead to implement Reno-Sparks region’s IBM Smarter City roadmap

030113-dri-smarter-cityLearn how DRI will help the TMRPA, the Cities of Reno and Sparks and Washoe County create an advanced, shared data analytics utility to serve the Truckee Meadows region.

As part of the Reno Smarter Cities Challenge, which identified a roadmap to build a shared data analytics utility to serve the region, the Desert Research Institute was recognized as the appropriate technical resource to support the underlying data analysis and engineering.

“I am very impressed with the observations and recommendations from the IBM team,” said Tom Jackman, Interim Senior Director of DRI’s Center for Advanced Computation, Visualization, and Modeling. “We (DRI) are honored to be recognized and tasked with implementing this ambitious roadmap. DRI has assembled resources and expertise in data analytics, data visualization and data engineering to accomplish such a goal for the region.”

In the coming weeks DRI will work closely with leadership from the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency to define the next steps in implementing an advanced public information system that could offer data analysis and interaction in real-time, referencing on-the-ground understanding of the region’s water supply, electrical grid, transportation system, real-estate market, social trends, and much more.

As part the Smarter City roadmap, Jackman, who has helped build DRI’s advanced data visualization capabilities since 2010, noted he was particularly pleased with the critical role data visualization was given in improving access and usability of information to the public and the region’s stakeholders.
