Advances in science and research are increasingly becoming part of news stories today, but for the scientists dedicated to research, communicating scientific discoveries to the public may not be part of their formal training. To smooth the gap that exists between the research outcome and delivering the message for public knowledge, the National Science Foundation has created Science: Becoming the Messenger-Communicating Science to a Non-Technical Audience. It is a series of workshops on how to effectively communicate advances in science to the public.

This exciting event will feature three prominent speakers: Emmy award-winning television producer Joe Schreiber; former PBS executive Dan Agan; and best-selling science journalist Chris Mooney. These interactive workshops are designed for participants to gain necessary skills in communicating science and research as well as tailoring messages to a broad audience. Researchers, scientists, undergraduate and graduate students, public information officers and journalist are encouraged to attend.

Who: National Science Foundation, Nevada System of Higher Education and Nevada EPSCoR
What: Conference and workshops on communicating science to a non-technical audience. NSF created these workshops so researchers will have a clear understanding of the broader impact requirements for NSF funded projects and to develop a database of trained scientists who are available to speak locally and nationally on behalf of NSF and the Nevada System of Higher Education on scientific developments.
When: Thursday, September 22, 2011 – open to all participants
When: Friday, September 23, 2011 - a special workshop for invited researchers
Where: University of Nevada, Las Vegas – Student Union and the Greenspun School of Journalism & Media Studies

About The Nevada System of Higher Education
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institute. NSHE serves the educational and job training needs of the nation's fastest growing state. NSHE provides educational opportunities to more than 108,000 students and is governed by the Nevada Board of Regents.

About the Nevada Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)
The goal of Nevada EPSCoR is to support collaborative partnerships between research, higher education institutions, and private industries to create long-term improvements in scientific research, infrastructures, R&D capacity and national competitiveness. Nevada EPSCoR programs enhance graduate education, stimulate undergraduate student research, and promote the involvement of women and underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
