Scientific Drilling to Study Human Origins in Africa

DRI’s Glenn Berger invited to participate in Ethiopian workshop

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 6, 2008

RENODRI scientist Glenn Berger has been invited to participate in an international workshop in Ethiopia Nov.17-21, 2008. The workshop in Addis Ababa will develop plans for scientific drilling activities and drill-core studies within Kenya and Ethiopia for the purposes of further exploring the link between past climate changes and the evolution of human ancestors.

Ethiopia is the home of the famous human-ancestor fossil “Lucy”, discovered in 1974 and known to be about 3 million years old. This workshop is sponsored by the US National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov) and the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (http://www.icdp-online.org).

Berger (Division of Earth and Ecosystems Science, http://www.dri.edu/People/gwberger), is a specialist in dating sediments up to 1 million years in age. He will participate in research planning at the workshop, bringing his experience from studies of the timing of human evolution in Spain.
