The Academy at Jim Bridger Middle School Goes Green Print E-mail

Bridger Middle School receives solar panels and weather station from GreenPower Program

LAS VEGAS —GreenPower is coming to the Jim Bridger Middle School Academy of Math, Science and Technology in North Las Vegas and the school is celebrating its arrival with a rally for seventh graders on Friday, Oct. 23, at 9 a.m. The school is located at 2505 North Bruce Street.

As part of the school’s customized GreenPower installation, photovoltaic solar panels have been installed at the school, along with special software that allows students to monitor data about the energy generated by the panels. In addition, DRI scientist Greg McCurdy from the Western Regional Climate Center installed a weather station and trained Bridger faculty on how to use the equipment and to incorporate the science into classroom instruction. GreenPower students from Bridger will also have the opportunity to take a field trip to the Springs Preserve.

The GreenPower program at Bridger was made possible through donations by NV Energy, National Security Technologies, U.S. Bank and The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Save the Planet Committee.

At Friday’s rally, winners of a poster and essay contest on the benefits of “going green” will each receive a savings bond courtesy of the GreenPower program. All the seventh graders will be getting water bottles made from recycled materials and the school is being presented with paper recycling bins for all its classrooms. The bottles and bins were donated by NV Energy.

“Bridger Middle School mathematics and science themes feature a unique technology-based learning environment and the GreenPower program and mission was a perfect fit,” said Deanna Kowal, Jim Bridger Middle School principal. “The solar panels, weather station and student kits will all serve as great hands-on environmental education tools for our students.”

GreenPower is a partnership between DRI and NV Energy and is funded by donations from utility customers. The mission of the nine-year-old program is to support and promote educating Nevada’s K-12 students in renewable energy and incorporating conscious living practices into their daily lives. There are currently 35 GreenPower schools throughout the state of Nevada. For more information please visit www.greenpower.dri.edu.
