DRI Researcher Hosts Canine Human Remains Detection Workshop Print E-mail

Applying Science in Canine Detection Work

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 4, 2009

RENO —This Labor Day Weekend specialized canine teams from California and Northern Nevada will gather at DRI’s Northern Nevada Science Center to discuss how scientific techniques advance the ability to detect human remains and the science behind many of the discovery practices.

HDR K9 team leaders that serve law enforcement will learn the science behind the canine’s ability to detect specific scent to scientifically document their work with dogs in order to quantify the canine’s capability.

“The event is intended to bring leading specialized search dog groups together with scientists so that handlers learn how to incorporate scientific approaches to discovering grave sites, for example,” said Dr. Mary Cablk, associate research professor and DRI and event organizer.

The conference is also an opportunity these teams to collaborate with others in the field to develop strategies and best practices.
