Design and Construction of a Large-Scale Lysimeter Facility at the Coeur Rochester Mine

Project Description

The overall objective of this project is to design and construct a field-scale test facility to evaluate the performance of cover systems at the Coeur Rochester Mine. The test section will include large drainage lysimeters for direct measurement of percolation. Additional soil and climate instruments will provide supporting data to interpret the percolation results and to identify mechanisms important to cover performance. The test sections will be placed at the mine site for representative site conditions and will be monitored for several years to include a range of climate variables. Two test sections will be constructed - one to evaluate the base-case cover currently in place on the State 1 heap and one to evaluate an alternative design.
