The Hydrology Program evaluates local and regional groundwater, vadose zone, and surface water hydrology at areas of concern to the NNSA/NSO and in support of such existing programs as the Underground Test Area Subproject and environmental monitoring programs. A major groundwater focus will continue to predict where and how rapidly groundwater may transport contaminants and at what concentration level. Surface water hydrologic issues center on existing and future facility safety and performance as affected by water and sediment transport, and could contribute to siting decisions for a new facility or activities. Vadose zone studies provide information required to assess the impact of contaminants or waste disposed in the vadose zone, performance assessment modeling, and assessment of waste disposal systems, and pathway evaluation to receptors.
