The initial focus of the overall STC research will be on the Rio Grande, Salt-Verde and San Pedro Basins, with emphasis by the snow researchers on the Upper Rio Grande. However, the resulting research findings and water resource management tools will be particularly suited to semi-arid regions and will have wide application in the Western US, including Nevada. This is particularly true for snow-related research since the vast majority of water supplies for Nevada's cities originate in seasonal snow packs at higher elevations. The development of such snow-related expertise at the Desert Research Institute and the implementation of related modeling capabilities will open up many new research directions and opportunities.
