Meet Yazeed Hammad Alsubhi, a Master's student in Atmospheric Sciences. Working with Dr. Eric Wilcox and Dr. Mike Kaplan, he is studying the differences between two Saudi Arabian dust storms using WRF-Chem to illustrate the different mechanisms between the dynamical processes.
What brought you to DRI?
While I was applying to the graduate school at UNR to pursue my Master’s degree in Atmospheric Sciences, I noticed its collaboration with the Desert Research Institute. I thought it would be an interesting step to be a part of this institute and to balance between course work and research. I decided that both UNR and DRI were suitable places for me to achieve my goals. After I was admitted to UNR, I was so excited to visit DRI’s campus to meet and discuss my interests with the professors, researchers, and the grad students. After coming to UNR, I immediately applied to be an official volunteer at DRI and work with Dr. Eric Wilcox.
What research projects are you working on? And who at DRI are you working with?
Currently, I am doing my Master thesis with Dr. Eric Wilcox and Dr. Mike Kaplan. I am studying the differences between two Saudi Arabian dust storms using WRF-Chem to illustrate the different mechanisms between the dynamical processes of these two case studies.
What are your short-term and long-term goals while at DRI?
My short-term goal is to complete my Master’s degree at UNR and DRI. This will allow me to begin accomplishing my long-term goal which is to pursue my PhD degree in the same department.
Tell us about yourself. What do you do for fun?
After completing my bachelor degree in mathematics at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and being accepted to pursue my Master’s degree at UNR, my family and I moved to Reno in 2014. We love being in the biggest little city in the world which is not crowded with people or vehicles.
In my spare time, I really enjoy spending time and hanging out with my family and friends, reading books, playing video games, and watching movies. In the summer, I enjoy my free time outdoors more. I love to go to beaches, swimming, and camping.
