Impacts of Industrialization on the Arctic Environment (Reno) Print E-mail

As part of DRI's 50th anniversary lecture series, we are pleased to present:

“Impacts of Industrialization on the Arctic Environment Reconstructed from Ice Cores”

Presenter: Dr. Joe McConnell, DRI Research Professor
Time and Date: 7:30 AM, Wednesday, November 18
Location: DRI Reno (Stout A Conference Room)
Notes: Open to the public

Lecture Description

The Arctic is far removed from the mid- and low-latitudes where most industrial activities take place, leading to the popular belief that the Arctic environment is pristine. Recent chemical measurements in ice cores collected from the Greenland ice sheet and from high elevation alpine glaciers in western Canada, however, document very significant changes in the Arctic over the past few centuries.

We use ice core and related modeling studies to explore the impacts that changing industrial practices and economic cycles have had on the Arctic from well before the Industrial Revolution up to the present and discuss possible futures for the Arctic environment.
