Renewable energy is an important area of research in which several scientists within the Earth and Ecosystem sciences are actively engaged. Most of the research focuses on local issues including the potential for biomass crop recovery and production in Nevada for biofuel production. In addition, several researchers are studying optimal environmental conditions for cultivating algae to extract biofuels. Finally, because of its geology Nevada is considered to be an important state for geothermal energy production. Our scientists are actively engaged in using remote sensing techniques to more quickly identify potential areas that may provide geothermal resources.
