Project Description

These studies include: (1) documentation of the changes in the Keeler Dunefield, Inyo County, California since the 1940s; (2) mapping of the spatial extent and relative age of lacustrine, deltaic, fluvial, and aeolian landforms along the northern – northeastern margins of Owens (dry) Lake between the mouth of the Owens River and the community of Keeler; (3) site-specific geomorphic context for the dunes by mapping aeolian, lacustrine, and alluvial landforms in the immediate vicinity of the dunefield with high-resolution spectral imagery and airborne laser swath mapping (ASLM) digital topographic data; (4) stratigraphic and chronometric information from radiocarbon and luminescence dating of aeolian deposits, flood silts, and beach ridges; and (5) determination of sand sources using XRD bulk mineralogy of fluvial, lacustrine, and aeolian sands.
