The Desert Research Institute proposes to conduct a one year long program of inventories of historic cemeteries on federal land in Lincoln County, thereby meeting an important agency need described in the Lincoln County Archaeological Initiative's (LCAI) request for proposals. We propose to conduct inventories and condition assessments of cemeteries selected in consultation with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) personnel to meet their management concerns, and will make recommendations for measures to protect and preserve the cemeteries. We will provide IMACS forms to the BLM and the Nevada Archaeological Information Center, and will prepare reports of the inventory, condition assessment, and recommendations for protection for each cemetery investigated. We will engage with local descendents, community members, and other persons interested in historic cemeteries of Lincoln County, and develop heritage tourism materials to support public outreach. Optionally, we also hope to initiate a pilot program to identify unmarked gravesites using geophysical methods (including ground-penetrating radar) and/or forensically-trained dogs.
