Professional Interests

Dr. Lowenthal's current research interests include the effects of natural and anthropogenic aerosols on cloud microphysics and precipitation, aerosol light extinction and visibility, and source apportionment modeling. A long-term study supported by EPRI investigates the physical and hygroscopic properties of organic carbon aerosols in U.S. national parks as they relate to the IMPROVE equation, a tool used to establish compliance under the U.S. EPA Regional Haze rule. Dr. Lowenthal is a co-investigator on a National Science Foundation study to determine the detailed chemical structure and thermodynamic properties of hygroscopic organics in remote U.S. continental aerosols.
