Professional Interests:

Dr. Xuelian Bai's research focuses on occurrence, risks, and fate and transport of contaminants in the environment. Dr. Bai's research includes field-monitoring, microcosm experiments (e.g., sorption, degradation, and bioaccumulation in soil-water-biota-plant systems), and modeling techniques. Dr. Bai's research projects include:

  • Effects of reclaimed water irrigation on plant uptake of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes;
  • Removal of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and endocrine disrupting chemicals by algae from surface and waste waters;
  • Evaluation of the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes in a highly urban-impacted wetland ecosystem;
  • Uptake and bioaccumulation of endocrine disrupting chemicals by quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis);
  • Microplastics in freshwater ecosystems;
  • Occurrence, distribution, and pattern analysis of organic contaminants in large-scale urban watersheds; and
  • Fate and transport of estrogenic compounds in agricultural soils with animal manure application.
