Taking Your Home’s Energy Temperature

An article authored by DRI Associate Research Professor Emeritus Charles "Fred" Rogers, Ph.D., outlines the best practices for homeowners who are looking to save money on their home heating and cooling bills. The article is published in the October/ November Edition of Home Power. In the article, Rogers answers the question “how effective is insulation, high-performance windows and weather stripping at reducing energy consumption and thus reducing one's utility bill.”

Rogers uses his 1952 home as a case study in proper insulation and weatherization as a correlation to energy consumption. Using data from the Western Regional Climate Center at DRI, Rogers calculated the amount of natural gas used to heat his house in relation to insulation measures over a 12-year period.
