5th Biennial Tahoe Basin Science Conference

More than 250 scientists, agency staff and managers, and stakeholders met in mid-March at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Science in Incline Village, Nevada to present and discuss results aimed at measuring the success of ecosystem restoration in the Lake Tahoe basin.

At the 5th Biennial Tahoe Basin Science Conference "Measuring the Success of Ecosystem Restoration in the Lake Tahoe Basin" DRI researchers and colleagues presented results from 45 science projects that have been funded primarily by $11.25 million in grants from the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) allocated through the Tahoe Science Program as part of SNPLMA over the past three years (see the 12/23/09 CWES Newsletter for more information).

Several DRI Researchers participated in the conference, making oral presentations, presenting posters, and acting as moderators for technical sessions and discussions. Alan Heyvaert moderated two sessions on Characterizing Aquatic Effects of the Angora Fire and Evaluating BMP Performance and Load Reductions, made two oral presentations and was a co-author on several other presentation abstracts. Alan Gertler also made an oral presentation, moderated two sessions on Air Quality and Road Dust, and was a co-author on several presentations. Rick Susfalk presented a poster on the impacts of the terrestrial sediment sources on nearshore water quality and was a co-author on several other presentation abstracts. Antony Chen made an oral presentation on Particle and Air Toxics Emissions from Prescribed Burning: Effects of Fuel Type and Moisture Content. Several other DRI researchers presented papers, all of the abstracts can be found in the PDF version of the conference program.

Great Lakes of the World

GLOW (Great Lakes of the World) is a continuing series of international symposia organized by The Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society (AEHMS) in order to promote interaction and communication between Great Lakes scientists and communities across the world. The GLOW VI conference is still accepting abstracts that focus on the concept of ecosystem approach in the Great Lakes of the World. Please download the GLOW V1 circular (PDF) for more information.

This year’s GLOW conference will be held in Incline Village, NV Aug. 1 - 4th. Lake Tahoe is an outstanding example of linking ecosystem science to management with a lot of success stories and lessons learned. Although the conference program is set there are still opportunities to have research related to lake systems included within the program as there is a section specific to Lake Tahoe research that is part of the program.
