Lab Description

Sample ArtifactThe archaeology laboratory at DRI's Southern Nevada Science Center is equipped to conduct a wide variety of studies that focus on the material culture of the Great Basin and elsewhere. DRI archaeologists and students have conducted analyses of artifacts from both prehistoric and historic sites.  Activities include lithic analysis, ceramic analysis, experimental stone tool and ceramic studies, artifact conservation, and the cataloging and preparation of artifacts for placement in curation facilities.

The above photo is a projectile point scanned during the preparation of artifacts for curation.  Mid-sized points like these were most likely used during the Middle Archaic Period in the Great Basin, between about 4,000 to 1,500 years ago.
