The Pacific Island Inventory and Monitoring Network (PACN) is establishing a climate/weather monitoring network with immediate needs including the establishment of 10 weather stations, training in weather station maintenance, and the development of a Internet-based information delivery system. The Western Regional Climate Center of the Desert Research Institute has considerable national expertise in weather/climate monitoring and will collaborate with PACN in meeting these needs. The products include weather data over a period of several years from 10 new Pacific Island stations that will be archived and easily accessible in near real time to the public and National Park Service staff. Public availability of these data will ensure that scientists can use these data in downscaling climate models and other climate research, which will contribute to better stewardship of the public resources that NPS is charged with protecting.
