Data Analysis and Modeling to Support NOWCAST and Forecast Activities at the Fallon Naval Air Station

Project Description

Task 1. To maintain instrumentation, data collection, and communication from the Fallon surface observational network. Task 2. To provide communication software, data quality assurance, and statistical and graphical analysis of the data from the surface observational network that will lead to improved nowcasts. Task 3. To continue execution of the real-time forecasting system with the assimilation of data from the surface weather stations, WSR-84 radar, and satellites. Task 4. In collaboration with our colleagues from the Naval Research Laboratory, to develop a methodology for multi-model ensemble forecasting using COAMPS and MM5 real-time forecasting systems. Task 5. To maintain instrumentation, data collection, and communication from the surface observations. Task 6. To provide communication software, data quality assurance, and statistical and graphical analysis of the data from the supplemental stations in an effort to improve nowcasts. Task 7. To continue execution of the real-time forecasting system with the assimilation of data from the weather stations, WSR-84 wind radar, and satellites to provide additional input to the NOWCAST system. Task 8. In collaboration with our colleagues from the Naval Research Laboratory, test the methodology developed in the first project year for multi-model ensemble forecasting using COAMPS and MM5 real-time forecasting systems.
