ACCESSING VIRTUAL REALITY FOR DATA EXPLORATION

The AIC houses the DRI Virtual Environments, referred to as the “DRIVE” platform. The DRIVE-4 is a flexible 4-sided concept development theater whereby early visualization experiment may be performed. The DRIVE-6 is a fully immersive 6-sided visual reality theater. One of only eight large format virtual reality theaters in the world, the DRIVE-6 is a sophisticated virtual reality enclosure with six projected surfaces that form all sides of a cube.

The DRIVE theater platform has the following use cases:

  • Dynamic 3D visualization of complex scenes and phenomena
  • Exploration of engineered datasets such as computational fluid dynamics models
  • Immersive training environments with real-time event and response propagation
  • Realistic architectural and structural modeling and “walk-through” visualization

Six-sided Full Immersion VR Lab:

  • 9-foot x 9-foot x 9-foot CUBE
  • 1920 x 1920 resolution per wall
  • Ultrasonic tracking (head and wand)
  • Real-time perspective with 3-6 people
  • 12 Christie Mirage HD3 projectors
  • 13 Compute nodes, 2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU W5590 @ 3.33GHz per node, 24GB RAM.

Four-sided decision theater:

  • Four 9-foot x 9-foot walls with flexible view geometry
  • 1050 x 10500 resolution per wall
  • Ultrasonic tracking (head and wand)
  • Real-time perspective with 8-12 people
  • 4 Christie Mirage HD3 projectors
  • 4 Compute nodes, 2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU W5590 @ 3.33GHz per node, 24GB RAM.
