MIXED PHASE CLOUD

CITATION AIRCRAFT
processed by Pat Arnott, DRI

Below follows 12 pages of PMS 2DC images from the mixed phase cloud, along with a short interpretation of the crystals shown. To return from an image, just click on it. Note that the concentration indicated by each buffer was about 1 to 2 crystals per Liter.

Page 1. Images show a mixture of small and large crystals. The large crystals are likely plates. Some of the plates have likely been sampled while they were rocking (the diagonal looking crystals), though they could also be columns. We will see this same diagonal orientation in many of the images below. It is possible that the plate crystals have become oriented due to the interaction with the probe.

Page 2. Largely the same as page 1.

Page 3. Similar to page 1, though the number of diagonal crystals is less, and the number of small crystals has diminished.

Page 4. Similar to page 3, though note that several crystals seem to have a hollow interior, indicating that they are probably plate like crystals that are optically pure.

Page 5. Note the appearance of sector plate crystals, and dendrites. Note several optically clean plates as well.

Page 6. Similar to page 5, and note the large plates present.

Page 7. Similar to page 6, though fewer dendrites, and more smaller crystals.

Page 8. Similar to page 7, though more blobby crystals, and more crystals (thin plates?) that have gone through the probe at an angle.

Page 9. Similar to page 8, though more smaller crystals are present.

Page 10. The overall size is smaller in these images, and the plates? are more hexagonal.

Page 11. Continuing the trend of page 10.

Page 12. Similar to pages 10 and 11, though with fewer crystals on the page.
