The Images below were taken using the DRI Automated Replicator System from data collected on April 19th 1994, an Intensive Observation Period (IOP) of the Department of Energy, Atmospheric Radiation Measurement project (DOE/ARM). Some of these crystals appear to "splash" perhaps indicating a liquid layer enveloping the crystals (sulfuric acid?). In comparison, well defined single crystals usually do not show such a pronounced "splash". The cloud was associated with a tropopause folding event and intrusion of stratospheric air. A similar effect and crystal habits have been observed in the FIRE II project during a flight on 5 Dec 91.
Collected images from 4/29/94.
