Research InterestsPeriphyton and Grazer Interactions Diane recently graduated with an M.S.from the University of Nevada, Reno where she was investigating the spatiotemporal variability in abundance and secondary production of Baetis tricaudatus Dodds (Mayfly species) in the Walker River system, NV and CA. More specifically, she was looking at what sections of river this species inhabits and what variables (i.e. velocity, substrate, temperature, season and food quality or quantity) this is attributed to. This research required an in depth look at a number of factors, including “feeding habits” of B. tricaudatus, periphyton biomass and diatom identification. Currently, she is assisting in the Systems Microbial Ecology Laboratory on a variety of projects focusing on algal growth and bio-optical properties of Antarctic pack ice; generating models of potential algal growth (biomass) in Antarctic sea ice and how this might impact Antarctic Krill, (Euphausia superb); and culturing algae for bio-fuel research.Personal InterestsHiking/Backpacking/Camping Selected Reports/Presentations/PublicationsFritsen, C.
