Organic Analytical Laboratory

Instruments and Equipment
Unique sampling capabilities include custom designed and manufactured samplers for carbonyl compounds, whole air samples (bags or canisters), and sorbent cartridges.
  • Custom designed and manufactured samplers for carbonyl compounds that can collect up to six samples unattended.
  • Bag/canister samplers that can collect up to 24 samples in a series with less than one second of sample loss in switching.
  • Custom designed and manufactured canister samplers that can collect up to seven samples (six plus one co-located) or up to three samples in series or simultaneously with no operator intervention.
  • Stainless steel canisters for volatile organic compounds, including new StabilizerÔ canisters.
  • Tenax cartridge sampling for semi-volatile organic compounds (C8-C20).
  • High and medium volume organic semi-volatile compound sampling and particulate-matter sampling (filter and PUF).
  • Four channel, fine particulate/PUF samplers equipped with PM 2.5 cut-off inlet.
  • Aircraft canister and carbonyl samplers.
  • DRI designed dilution tunnel, suitable for source sampling.
The Organic Analytical Laboratory maintains all of its equipment according to strict quality assurance standards. Quality control procedures define schedules for periodic calibration and performance t esting including blank and replicate analyses. Pre-defined tolerances have been established for each piece of equipment, and specific actions are mandated if tolerances are exceeded during performance tests.
  • Integrated high resolution gas chromatograph (GC)/Fourier transform infrared detector (IRD)/mass spectrometer detector (MSD). This system includes the Hewlett-Packard 5890 GC, 5965 IRD, 5970 MSD and is equipped with the Hewlett-Packard 7673A Automatic Injector, the MSD ChemStation, and IRD ChemStation.
  • Varian Saturn Ion Trap GC/MS system with MS/MS and chemical ionization capabilities.
  • Two Hewlett-Packard 5890 Series II gas chromatographs (GC) equipped with flame ionization detectors (FID) and one with electron capture detector (ECD).
  • Varian 3700 GC equipped with flame ionization detector and methanizer catalyst system.
  • Cryogenic trap for injection of gaseous samples from stainless steel canister or sampling bags.
  • The Chrompack Thermal Desorption Cold Trap Injector unit (Chrompack International BV). This unit can operate with either GC/FID/ECD or GC/IRD/MSD systems.
  • Waters high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) equipped with two Waters 501 high precision pumps, Waters 484 variable wavelength UV detector, Waters system interface module, Waters 810 baseline data system, and Waters 712 WISP LC Autosampler.
