Geoscience Research at StormPeak Lab
Water Resources Management Program
The Desert Research Institute (DRI), the environmental research campus of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), is engaged in full-time basic and applied research in the earth and environmental sciences. DRI faculty are actively involved in the academic programs of the state's two universities, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Nevada, Reno, in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses and in advising and supporting students. The Institute also provides significant research opportunities for graduate students as they pursue their advanced degrees, including a number of fellowships.
The Jonathan O. Davis Scholarship in Quaternary Sciences
The family, colleagues, and friends of Jonathan O. Davis, a prominent geologist and geoarchaeologist, have established an endowment which provides a $4,000 annual national scholarship, plus a $1,500 stipend for a University of Nevada, Reno, student. Davis, a member of DRI's faculty from 1980 to 1990, died in an automobile accident in December 1990. The national scholarship, administered by DRI's Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, is open to graduate students enrolled in a M.S. or Ph.D. program at any U.S. university. The stipend is open to graduate students enrolled in a M.S. or Ph.D. program at the University of Nevada, Reno. Applicants must be pursuing research with a substantial geologic component or that demonstrates a strong reliance on geological techniques. Applicants must submit a description of the thesis/dissertation research that clearly documents its geologic orientation and research significance.
Applications must be postmarked by February 2nd so that the scholarship can be used during the subsequent summer.
