SCIENCE BOX OVERVIEW
Kit #38
Name: “Connecting with Electricity”
Grade Level: 3-5
Content Strand: Physical Science
Content Standard and Description: Energy & Matter: Interaction and Forms – Students understand that changes in temperature and pressure can alter states of matter. Energy exists in many forms, and one form can be changed into another.
Summary: With seven great lesson plans and fun activities to do in all, students will have a great time learning all about how to “connect” with electricity.
Learning Cycle Lesson Plans: Here is the list of the lesson plans in this kit.
1. “Charging with Static” – Using all different and fun objects such as salt, Styrofoam, and a magic wand, students will discover how a statically charged object affects other objects.
2. “Complete Circuits” – By using the supplies given in this kit, students will discover how to make a complete circuit using only two wires, a battery, and a light bulb.
3. “Circuits and Sound” – In this lesson, students will discover how a circuit can transmit messages using a bulb to represent sound.
4. “Electromagnet” – By using fun tools like batteries and wire, students will discover how an electromagnet works and how to make it most efficient.
5. “Circuit Breaker” – Batteries, balloons, and bulbs will have students building a circuit breaker and learning what its function is as part of a circuit.
6. “Electric Motors” – In this lesson, students will do a fun hands-on activity using magnets, magnet wire, bell wire, and batteries to make a simple motor.
7. “Conductors and Insulators” – Students will test various items to discover whether they are conductors or insulators of electricity.
What to Expect: By the time teachers are finished using this kit, they can expect their students to know certain things. The third and fourth graders will be able to investigate and describe how circuits can produce light, heat, sound, and magnetic effects. The fifth graders will be able to do that plus describe how electrical components are utilized in the designs of simple electric circuits.
Evaluations: Here is what other teachers have said about this box.
1. “Thank you for allowing my class this wonderful experience.”
2. “Great resources, Thank you.”
