SCIENCE BOX OVERVIEW
Kit #37

Name: “Heat 101”
Grade Level: 3-5
Content Strand: Physical Science
Content Standard and Description: Energy & Matter – (Heat and Temperature). Students understand that changes in temperature and pressure can alter states of matter. Energy exists in many forms, and one form can change into another.

Summary: Using a variety of tools such as fire, scales, and different hoses, students will learn all about the properties of heat. They will learn about the expanding and shrinking of different objects, as well as what is needed to keep a flame going and how to put it out.

Learning Cycle Lesson Plans: Here is the list of the lesson plans in this kit.

1. “Almond Energy” – By using various techniques, students will be able to calculate the amount of energy that one almond contains, and come up with ideas of how almond energy could be used in the world.

2. “Copper Heat” – In this teacher demonstrated experiment, students will learn all about what the shrinking and expanding of objects when they are heated. They will explore and find out why certain things act the way they do under heat.

3. “Candle Heat” – Students will learn all about candle heat and how many ways there are to put out a candle. They will learn that oxygen fuels the flame and how to take away the heat of the candle.

What to Expect: By the teachers are done using this kit, they can expect their students to know certain things. The third graders will be able to investigate and describe how heat moves from one object to another at different rates, depending on what the objects are made of and whether they are touching each other. The fourth graders will know that, plus be able to explain the transformation of energy usually resulting in some energy in some form of heat which spreads by radiation, conduction, or convection into cooler places. Finally, the fifth graders will be able to do all of that, plus describe how hot or cold an object is by expressing its temperature, as well as investigate and describe how warm objects cool, and cool objects warm when they are put together until they reach the same temperature.

Evaluations: Here is what other teachers have said about this box.

1. “Great science box – very beneficial to this grade level.”
2. “This is an excellent teaching tool.”
3. “I enjoyed using this box and look forward to using additional boxes.”
