Content Standard and Description: Structure and Function – Students understand that all life forms, at all levels of organization, use specialized structures and similar processes to meet life’s needs.
Summary: Through great lessons and all sorts of hands-on activities, students will learn all about their five senses. Using fun tools like popcorn and blindfolds, students will have all kinds of fun while they explore their senses and learn all about how to use them.
Learning Cycle Lesson Plans: Here is the list of the lesson plans in this kit.
1. “Introduction to the Five Senses” – By using a song, and other hands-on activities, students will learn the origin of their five senses as they relate to their body parts (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, hands), and use those five senses to collect data and classify objects according to their attributes.
2. “Exploring the Five Senses” – In this lesson students learn how to use their five senses by making observations while doing a treasure hunt. Using all different kinds of objects, students will hunt all kinds of fun learning all about their senses.
3. “Animal Senses” – This lesson will review the five senses in humans, as well as introduce the similarities and differences in animal senses. Students will do activities to find out the senses that animals use.
4. “All our Senses” – This lesson as well, will review and wrap up the five senses. Students will use all five of their senses to explore the secret of popcorn this fun hands-on lesson is a great way to close out this science box.
What to Expect: By the end of using this kit, teachers can expect their students to know the following: The kindergarteners will be able to compare and contrast how humans and animals use their senses. The first graders will be able to do that as well as use their five senses to investigate the natural world. Also the first graders will be able to draw pictures that describe observations. Finally the second graders will be able to do all of that plus be able to make observations and give descriptions using words, numbers, and drawings.
