SCIENCE BOX OVERVIEW

Kit #31

Name: “Matter Matters”
Grade Level: K-2
Content Strand: Physical Science
Content Standard and Description: Energy & Matter: Interactions and Forms - Students understand that changes in temperature and pressure can alter states of matter, energy exists in many forms, and one form can change into another.

Summary: In this kit students will explore the properties of matter and their states. They will study water as it exists in all three states. A final experiment will have them having fun as they figure out how water and ice are used to make ice cream.

Learning Cycle Lesson Plans: Here is the list of the lesson plans in this kit.

1. “Matter” – This lesson introduces students to the concept of matter. By learning a song, and doing experiments, students learn that matter takes up space and has mass.

2. “What’s the Matter?, Part 1” – Students classify matter as a solid or liquid. They will learn and describe the properties of both, and then identify objects as one or the other.

3. “What’s the Matter?, Part 2” – Students learn about gas in this lesson. Students will describe and learn the properties of gas and trap gas in bags. They will explore visible and scented gases.

4. “Changing States of Matter” – Students will learn about water in its different states. They will explore and observe the process of changing water into different states, by making ice cream.

What to Expect: BY the end of the second grade, teachers can expect their students to know how to observe and describe materials in different states (i.e. solids, liquids, gases), and they will be able to investigate and describe how objects can change state (i.e. melting an ice cube).

Evaluations: Here is what other teachers have said about this box.

1. “Keep up the good work.  It really helps.”
2. “Excellent!  The lesson plans helped a lot.”
3. “I was grateful for a chance to borrow one of the boxes.  I am teaching a new grade level this year and haven’t had a chance to collect materials.  This was helpful to get some ideas to use in my classroom.”
