SCIENCE BOX OVERVIEW

Kit #27

Name: “Electrical Attraction”
Grade Level: 4-6
Content Strand: Physical Science
Content Standard and Description: Energy & Matter, Forces & Motion – Students will investigate and describe the effects magnets have on other materials and the effect of materials in an electrical current.

Summary: By using a wide variety of tools such as magnets, and different metals, students will have fun learning all about magnets and electrical attractions. Students will learn how to make circuits and what makes a magnet attracted to certain objects, but not to others.

Learning Cycle Lesson Plans: Here is the list of the lesson plans in this kit.

1. “Electrical Attraction” – Students will learn all about the forces all around us that have an effect on other objects.

2. “Circuits” – Students will discover and explore the components needed to make a simple circuit, and learn what it takes to make a complex one as well.

What to Expect: By the end of using this kit students will know the following: How to observe and describe how magnets can be used to make objects move without being touched. Also investigate and describe the ways that magnets attract and repel each other and certain kinds of other materials. They will investigate and describe how circuits can produce light, heat, sound, and magnetic effects. They will describe how electrical components are utilized in the design of simple electrical circuits, and finally investigate and describe how electrical energy can be transferred through various materials.

Evaluations: Here is what other teachers have said about this box.

1. “Thanks so much for making these kits available for teachers to use.”
2. “I have enjoyed the kits you have sent our school—thanks so much.”
3. “Always a pleasure—quality materials—wonderful people.”
