SCIENCE BOX OVERVIEW
Kit #13
Name: “Force and Motion”
Grade Level: 3-5
Content Strand: Physical Science
Content Standard and Description: Forces and Motion - Students understand that forces such as gravitational, electrical, and magnetic influence the motion of objects.
Summary: By using cool hands-on activities and items such as marbles, hot wheels racer cars, and wooden blocks, students will have fun learning all about forces and motion. Put together with books and videos, this kit contains everything the teacher needs to fulfill this content strand for their students. Fun and learning will be had by all in this kit designed for hands-on and group activities.
Learning Cycle Lesson Plans: Here is the list of the lesson plans in this kit.
1. “It’s Magic, It’s Amazing, It’s Inertia!” – Students will brainstorm ideas to make experiments more successful as they participate in an activity to test various solutions to a problem. They will record their results and recall what inertia is.
2. “Ladies and Gentleman, Start your Engines!” – Students will discover momentum always causes an object to go somewhere, momentum can travel through objects and be passed on, and momentum can cause a change in direction of an object.
3. “Hey, Stop Already!” – Students will discover that friction and gravity slow and eventually stop the motion of objects on earth. Also the ideas of outside force and momentum will be discovered as well.
What to Expect: After using this kit teachers can expect their students to know the following: Between grades three and five students will be able to apply unbalanced forces (a push or pull), to cause objects to change their motion (e.g. speed, direction, or both). Also they will be able to investigate and describe the relationship that exists between the sizes of a change in motion of an object to the size of a push or pull on that object.
Evaluations: Here is what other teachers have said about this box.
